Character progression in open-world RPGs tends to collapse into one of two failure modes. Either it becomes a grind treadmill — you need to farm the same enemy camp 200 times before the next zone is survivable — or it's so shallow that leveling feels like decoration on top of the real game. We've played both kinds. Neither one is what we're building.
The constraint we set for ourselves: progression should deepen a combat role, not invalidate a playstyle. If you built a Weaver in Dev Log #002 around chaining elemental debuffs, a level-40 Weaver should feel like a mastered version of that — not like a completely different character who happens to have the same name. Progression adds texture. It doesn't replace the foundation.
How Leveling Works
XP in Lumina Quest comes from exploration, combat, and zone completion — not just from grinding enemy spawns. Discovering a new area awards XP. Clearing an encounter does too. Completing a zone objective gives a bigger chunk. The intent is that a player who engages with the world fully will level at a natural pace without ever feeling like they need to run circles around a camp.
The more important design decision is what happens when you level. Every level-up presents a single meaningful choice: either shift your stat weight (lean harder into attack speed, elemental potency, or defense) or pick up a passive trait that changes how one of your abilities behaves. Not both. One choice. The number going up is not the reward — the decision is the reward.
For Alpha, we're targeting a soft cap of level 40. That's enough room to make meaningful choices without needing the full talent tree to be balanced at launch. The hard cap is TBD — we'll see how the XP curve feels in playtesting before we commit to a ceiling.
Talent Trees
Each character archetype has three talent trees: one for offense, one for utility, and one for resonance — the elemental synergy layer we built the combat system around. Each tree is five nodes deep. That's intentionally short.
The depth in this system doesn't come from building one character tall — it comes from how you combine characters in your party. A fully-specced Striker pairs differently with a utility-focused Catalyst than with a resonance-focused Anchor. The interesting decisions happen at the party level, not the individual character level. Short trees keep individual characters readable and push the strategy outward.
A few example nodes to give you a sense of the flavor:
- OffenseFracture Edge — your Striker's heavy attacks ignore 15% of elemental resistance after breaking an Anchor's shield wall.
- OffenseSurge Burst — when a Catalyst triggers a resonance chain, the final hit deals bonus damage equal to the number of elements in the chain.
- UtilityIronveil Stance — your Anchor generates a shield pulse every 12 seconds when not struck, stackable up to two pulses.
- UtilityThreadwalker's Mark — enemies debuffed by a Weaver take 10% increased damage from all sources for 6 seconds after the debuff expires.
- ResonanceVerdant Attunement — Verdant-element abilities applied by your party leave a lingering bloom that restores a small amount of elemental gauge on contact.
- ResonanceRift Echo — the second elemental hit in a resonance chain within 3 seconds deals an additional 8% damage for each unique element already in the chain.
Gear
Gear in Lumina Quest drops from exploration and zone clears. Not a loot treadmill. We are specifically not designing a system where you farm the same boss 80 times hoping for a better roll on a specific substat.
Each gear piece has a primary stat and one resonance slot. The primary stat affects power directly. The resonance slot ties into the elemental system — it amplifies or modifies how your equipped element interacts with the world. The interesting part of gear isn't raw numbers; it's finding resonance combinations that reinforce your party composition in ways you didn't expect.
For Alpha: no rarity tiers. All gear is flat power with different resonance combinations. We're designing for an interesting build space, not best-in-slot farming. If that changes after playtesting feedback, we'll say so — but the baseline commitment is that gear should feel like a set of choices, not a checklist.
Where We Are Now
Honest status: the talent trees are white-boarded and the node names are locked in, but the full tree UI isn't implemented yet. The gear schema is designed — primary stat, resonance slot, the whole structure — but it's not in the prototype. The leveling XP curve is actively being tested inside the combat prototype from Dev Log #002. It's early, but the shape feels right: levels come quickly at first and slow down as you approach the soft cap, with the choices getting more meaningful the further in you go.
Target for playable progression: Alpha Q4 2026. We'll have a build where you can level a character to 20+, make real choices in the talent trees, and see gear with resonance slots affecting how combat plays out. That's the bar we're building toward.
Next up: we're tackling multiplayer co-op — how two players explore Ashveil Highlands together without breaking the single-player encounter design. That's a harder problem than it sounds. More soon.
